SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library for a discussion of September’s book\, Circe by Madeline Miller. \nSummary: \n“In the house of Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not obviously powerful like her father\, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. \nThreatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur; Daedalus and his doomed son\, Icarus; the murderous Medea; and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. \nBut there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or the mortals she has come to love. \nWith unforgettably vivid characters\, mesmerizing language\, and page-turning suspense\, Circe is a triumph of storytelling\, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry\, palace intrigue\, love\, and loss\, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world.” (via The StoryGraph)

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library for a discussion of October’s book Fahrenheit 451. October 4th-10th is Banned Books Week\, which unites readers\, librarians\, educators\, and booksellers to highlight the dangers of censorship and support access to diverse ideas. Over the years\, Fahrenheit 451 has been challenged and was subjected to expurgation (words were censored and/or changed by the publisher without Bradbury’s knowledge). \nSummary: \n“Over seventy years after its original publication\, Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 stands as a classic of world literature set in a bleak\, dystopian future. Today its message has grown more relevant than ever before. \nGuy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities\, the printed book\, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce\, returning each day to his bland life and wife\, Mildred\, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor\, Clarisse\, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television\, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.” (via TheStoryGraph)

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library for a discussion of November’s book\, The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich. \nSummary: \nThomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant\, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa Council member who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress. It is 1953 and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom; Congress is fed up with Indians. The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow\, and the rivers run”? \nSince graduating high school\, Pixie Paranteau has insisted that everyone call her Patrice. Unlike most of the girls on the reservation\, Patrice\, the class valedictorian\, has no desire to wear herself down with a husband and kids. She makes jewel bearings at the plant\, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother. Patrice’s shameful alcoholic father returns home sporadically to terrorize his wife and children and bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to follow her beloved older sister\, Vera\, who moved to the big city of Minneapolis. Vera may have disappeared; she hasn’t been in touch in months\, and is rumored to have had a baby. Determined to find Vera and her child\, Patrice makes a fateful trip to Minnesota that introduces her to unexpected forms of exploitation and violence\, and endangers her life. \nThomas and Patrice live in this impoverished reservation community along with young Chippewa boxer Wood Mountain and his mother Juggie Blue\, her niece and Patrice’s best friend Valentine\, and Stack Barnes\, the white high school math teacher and boxing coach who is hopelessly in love with Patrice. \nIn The Night Watchman\, Louise Erdrich creates a fictional world populated with memorable characters who are forced to grapple with the worst and best impulses of human nature. Illuminating the loves and lives\, the desires and ambitions of these characters with compassion\, wit\, and intelligence\, The Night Watchman is a majestic work of fiction from this revered cultural treasure.
