SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, September 29\, at 6:30 for a discussion on this month’s book\, Animal Farm by George Orwell. \nA farm is taken over by its overworked\, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans\, they set out to create a paradise of progress\, justice\, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned–a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible. \nWhen Animal Farm was first published\, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked\, under whatever banner\, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell’s masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh. \nThis is perfect to read during Banned Books Week\, September 27-October 3!

SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 29\, at 6:30 for a discussion on this month’s book\, Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link\, this year’s NEA Big Read Selection. \nKelly Link has lit up adult literary publishing\, and Viking is honored to publish her first YA story collection. Through the lens of Link’s vivid imagination\, nothing is what it seems\, and everything deserves a second look. From the multiple award-winning The Faery Handbag\, in which a teenager’s grandmother carries an entire village (or is it a man-eating dog?) in her handbag\, to the near-future of The Surfer\, whose narrator (a soccer-playing skeptic) waits with a planeload of refugees for the aliens to arrive\, Link’s stories are funny and full of unexpected insights and skewed perspectives on the world.

SUMMARY:Adult's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our discussion of The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. We’ll be meeting early again this month because of Christmas. Copies are available for pickup now. \nIn April 1942\, Lale Sokolov\, a Slovakian Jew\, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages\, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist)\, tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. \nImprisoned for more than two and a half years\, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism—but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life\, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive. \nOne day in July 1942\, Lale\, prisoner 32407\, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita\, and in that first encounter\, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her. \nA vivid\, harrowing\, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov’s experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust\, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is also a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club 2021 Challenge is “Reading Colors Your World.” January is Turquoise! \nJoin us for discussion of our latest book\, Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff\, on Thursday\, January 28\, 2021\, at 6:30pm. \nEvery story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes\, it turns out\, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich\, expansive\, layered novel\, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years. \nAt age twenty-two\, Lotto and Mathilde are tall\, glamorous\, madly in love\, and destined for greatness. A decade later\, their marriage is still the envy of their friends\, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club 2021 Challenge is “Reading Colors Your World.” February is Fuchsia!\n\nJoin us this month in discussing Lock Every Door by Riley Sager.\nAs usual\, masking and distancing required. \nNo visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents\, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew\, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke\, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms\, ready to leave her past life behind. \nAs she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew\, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid\, who comfortingly\, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her\, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story—until the next day\, when Ingrid disappears. \nSearching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance\, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer\, expose the building’s hidden past\, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent. SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club 2021 Challenge is “Reading Colors Your World.” March is Green!\n\nJoin us this month in discussing Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson.\n\nAs usual\, masking and distancing required. \n\n\nA failed revolutionary attempt drives the hero of Hudson’s novel to seek refuge in the primeval forests of south-western Venezuela. There\, in the ‘green mansions’ of the title\, Abel encounters the wood-nymph Rima\, the last survivor of a mysterious aboriginal race. The love that flowers between them is soon overshadowed by cruelty and sorrow… One of the acknowledged masters of natural history writing\, W. H. Hudson forms an important link between nineteenth-century Romanticism and the twentieth-century ecological movement. \nFirst published in 1904 and a bestseller after its reissue a dozen years later\, Green Mansions offers its readers a poignant meditation on the loss of wilderness\, the dream of a return to nature\, and the bitter reality of the encounter between savage and civilized man.
